Kampong Thom is the second largest province in Cambodia by region, located in central Cambodia, on the shores of Stung Saen.
Kampong Thom is one of the five provinces situated in the lower part of the Tonle Sap Lake and rich in historical sites of the pré-Angkorienne era, such as Sambor and IPSP Kuk which are the two main temples in Kompong Thom.
Sambor Prei Kuk, a former town in this province which has about two hundred temples of brick, was the capital of the Khmer Empire for many centuries.
People who usually live around this area saw these large snakes each Buddhist festivals because long ago, at the wharf of the Sen River next to a large natural lake, there was a large cave with a pair of large snakes inside.
Other attractions of the city
Phnom Thom is a natural and cultural site located in the village of Koh KB, 17 kilometres south of the city of Kampong Thom province. The site includes four mountains: Srah Kmao Phnom, Phnom Krapeu, Phnom Champa and Phnom Santuk.
Prasat Kuhak Nokor is located in the Village of Poung of Trodork, and the complex of Wat Kuhak Nokor.
It is 79 km from provincial city of Kampong Thom. These shelters were built on the flat, on a terrace square to the East with the bulwark on sandstone and laterite. This rampart has a length of 35 m (to the West) and width of 25 m (from North to South). There is surrounding rampart of one metre in height and 0.8 metre thick with two gateways: Eastern gateway is divided into 3 rooms 9 m height and is West is small and has the form square.
Wat Kampong Thom is located in the village of Kdei, approximately 1 kilometre from the city of the province. This old temple is a sacred place which covers 2 053 square metres. Related to the history of Buddha in the pagoda statues can be found. The fences of the pagoda are painted in many different colors and styles. The pagoda offers a fresh and visitors place to relax, especially during the holiday season.
